The work's essays, together with its nine hundred wood engravings and fifty steel engravings, are considered to have had a profound influence on the growth of tourism and the historic preservation movement in the United States." All steel engravings with tissue guards. Volume I with 568 pages. Volume II with 576 pages. Bound in original half black calf over black cloth covered boards. Four raised bands with lettering and rule in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Leather shows some rubbing and the cloth has areas of light fade and rubbing. Pages without foxing or wear. Overall, a very good plus two volume set.
